Globalization

How has Clarksville been affected by globalization? Do you think locals think the change is good or bad?

  1. I think Clarksville has been affected with all the new jobs coming here. Like the tire plant thing. I think the change would be good because of job opportunities and other business.

  2. i think that because most clothes are made overseas, people are ignorant sometimes and don't take a moment to think about the people who made their clothes and what their lives are like. i'm not actually sure how many new jobs were created from certain factories coming to this town. but the more jobs the better, seeing as how quickly clarksville is growing.

    1. I think that Globalization could bring the textile industry here and your clothes could be made a mile or so down the road.

    2. I agree. I think a lot of the people move here thanks to job opportunities, or simply because the town is growing in popularity thanks to all this change.

  3. I do think Clarksville has been affected by globalization. The new tire plant is a major contributor this. I also believe the locals would be thrilled to have change. Change could mean more jobs, businesses and economy boosts. Globalization could boost our popularity as a city.

    1. I totally agree with you. Especially with the popularity thing, we could become one of the top 3 places in Tennessee

    2. I also agree with you about the population, because we already are the 5th largest place in Tennessee.

    3. I agree with Dani, that we have grown population wise. In 2010, Clarksville's population was 132,929 people, but the latest survey in 2013, says that Clarksville now has, 142,357 people living here.

    4. I agree with you Maggie, and a lot of that has to do with the new tire plant, like dani said, it could be better for new jobs

  4. Globalization is the worldwide movement toward economics, trade, financial and communications. At my age, I can't really say how Clarksville has been effected by this. But I believe people that have lived here longer may say the change is both good and bad.

  5. Clarksville's been affected by all the new products and more jobs opportunities. Like the new tire plant. Globalization is helping clarksville grow bigger, it's now the 5th largest place in Tennessee.

    1. I agree that Clarksville is growing bigger. Globalization has led to the opening of several new shops and businesses which help Clarksville expand. Unfortunately, this can lead to having less locally owned small businesses.

    2. Continuing with Cheyenne's thought, this could be good or bad for anybody really, some people having to lose their jobs because businesses being shut down, losing all their money and workers, while others could get better jobs at better place that gain lots of people working for a bigger pay.

  8. I believe that Globalization has affected Clarksville, although I kindly must disagree with Jason. I don't think that many jobs have opened up. In the manufacturing and factory business there are, but if we are talking about administration and white-collar jobs, than I don't believe that to many of those have opened up.

    1. Also, I believe that some locals would love for globalization to affect Clarksville, but there are some people that would think otherwise.

    2. Yeah, some people would consider Tennessee a "Confederate State" and are probably not fans of globalization.

  13. I believe that Clarksville has been affected by Globalization by the new tire plant. I think a change is good. This change could make new jobs and opportunities, which could lead to more population. I think people in Clarksville are happy for a change.

  14. I think that this makes Clarksville a more popular place to live in. Not necessarily a better tourist attraction, but it would appeal to younger families looking for a place to start a home. This creates new opportunities and jobs for people looking to settle down, though I still don't really see it developing into the tourist spot that Nashville is anytime soon. The locals might be happy because of the better jobs and new businesses- or they could be upset about the influx of businesses like the tire factory. It all depends.

    1. I completely agree with both sides of your point! Clarksville has grown so much and has created many jobs that have brought many families here. That is also why some people might not like Clarksville growing, some people have lived here for so long and are not used to the change.

    2. I agree 100% with both sides of your opinion on how the locals could take it! There are many ways globalization can affect us in positive and negative ways. We have had a lot more people move to Clarksville over the years and it has been good for our community to grow but I don't think we are going to become a tourist attraction like Nashville, but you never know.

  16. Clarksville has been affected by globalization by the addition of businesses and products from around the world. I think locals think this a good and bad thing. It is good because it provides a way to cheaply manufacture products for sale and provides an influx of foreign businesses and products that create jobs. It is bad thing because it can cause many locally owned businesses and shops to go out of business. These locally owned businesses are what makes Clarksville unique, and globalization is making the demand for one of a kind shops less and less.

    3. I think these are very good points and I totally agree with them. I do think these family businesses do make Clarksville unique and it's a shame to see them go out of business.

  17. Clarksville, like many people have said, has become the 5th largest city in Tennessee, just following Chattanooga. But how did we do it? Go look around our downtown area, what do you see? Small businesses, why, because that's what we feed off of. Here in Clarksville, we grow our downtown faster than our suburbs. Things like our downtown farmers market on early Saturday mornings are things that other small cities don't have. And people like, a lot. Our population in 2010, was 132,929, but in 2013, it raised all the way to 142,357. In three years almost 10,000 people moved into Clarksville. The problem is that with more people moving here, bigger companies and factories start moving to Clarksville, and with this we could lose the small businesses that make us who we are. Globalization could be a good thing for some cities, but if it makes its way to Clarksville, we may not be the same.

  18. Clarksville has been greatly affected by globalization by military families moving here, big businesses start coming, and job opportunities. I feel its affected Clarksville in a good way and most times its great to have a change and local businesses grow from being just local. Families come here to start their lives somewhere where it isn't polluted and crowded and its great for new opportunities for people who visit or come here.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Globalization doesn't make Clarksville a more popular place to live in. Maybe not a better tourist attraction, but it would be a good place for families to start a home. There are new opportunities and jobs for people looking to live here. But in my opinion, I don't think that Clarksville is going to be a big tourist attraction like Nashville or Chattanooga. I haven't been around long enough to know if globalization has affected Clarksville in a good way or a bad way.

  20. Globalization could be either good or bad for anybody, it just depends on your view point. The new tire plant could be good for some people who don't have any jobs, but there are some businesses that might have to be shut down due to a lack of workers which leads to a lack of money to keep the place running.

    1. The new tire plant wouldn't destroy jobs unless it ran other companies out of business, which I don't see happening in Clarksville. I think the new plant is a great way to give people jobs in Clarksville.

  23. Foreign businesses that open up in Clarksville are a sign of globalization like the tire plant. Its good because it creates more jobs for people in Clarksville but is bad because its a foreign company competing with the United States companies.

  24. Clarksville has been greatly affected by Globalization by large businesses and job opportunities. This is what has made our city grow so much in the past few years! Depending on your view point of the city growing or not, Globalization could be a good or bad thing.

  25. Globalization has affected Clarksville in many ways. Back in 20th Century, big companies moved overseas for cheaper business, that led to recessions and inflation rising. Just think, when was the last time you wore a shirt that was Made in the USA? For me, I'm not even sure. Factories left for cheaper costs, that gave other countries jobs and made the US lose jobs. Globalization is good for other countries, but for the cities in the USA, globalization isn't all that great.

    ReplyDelete

    1. you are right that many companies are moving to different countries for cheaper labor and this has taken away many americans jobs.

      Delete
    2. But does it always have to be a bad thing? Many jobs have been formed because of foreign companies coming to Clarksville. I certainly think that we need to have as many small businesses as we can and we need to let them do well economically, but personally I don't think that some big foreign companies would be so terrible

  26. I think Clarksville has been affected by globalization because of all the new jobs opening up. The locals think that it is good because more jobs are opening up and making the economy better. It could also be bad because other companies would leave to other countries for cheaper labor and people would lose their jobs so the unemployment rate would go up.

  27. I think Clarksville has been affected in many ways by globalization because it is a nice place to live at and because of the decent job openings. And the people who have already lived here think that the growth is good because more businesses are opening and the city is expanding.

  28. Globalization has greatly effected Clarksville by making one of the biggest towns in clarksville. Clarksville has grown so much because of the Business's opening because of all the Military families moving into the Fort Campbell area. But jobs were also taken away when factories moved to other countries because of cheaper labor.

    1. I agree that you can look at it two ways. Many people have gotten jobs at Fort Campbell, but many jobs have left Clarksville to go overseas.

  30. There are many contributing factors to the Globalization of Clarksville. Factories play a big part because the new factories here create new job opportunities, but some factories moves to developing countries for the cheaper labor. the affect of Globalization in Clarksville can be good or bad depending on how you look at it.

  31. I feel that Clarksville has been impacted by Globalization. There are quite a few people that live in the Clarksville area and most are military families. With us being so close to Fort Campbell, our city will continue to grow as the military does. Many job opportunities are offered in Clarksville, so I think that Globalization has greatly helped Clarksville.

  32. I feel as if globalization has helped clarksville. Most of clarksville's population is military, so our city is growing , more building are being built in the result of that there will be more job opportunities available and that'll benefit our local economy. On another not it could be bad will these young military there may be more car accidents and streets will be more busy because of all the new citizens in clarksville

    1. I completely agree with you Breonna! The large military base has help Clarksville globalize in many levels, but some locals still want the small town aspect and not want our population to grow.

  33. I think that most people in Clarksville have very different views about globalization. Some people love the idea of Clarksville growing, but some are missing the small town. Many supporters of globalization think that it can solve many issues such as poverty and unemployment, and I totally agree with them. One big sign that globalization has affected Clarksville, as many people have mentioned, is the new tire plant!

  35. Fort Campell brings in a lot of different people for the military so we're exposed to different types of people

  36. Clarksville has definitely been affected by globalization greatly. As more chain stores and restaurants move into Clarksville, the city expands by drawing many people to these popular places. Although, this can be looked to as both good and bad. These new chain businesses bring many new people, but it can also take away the attention of the other small businesses, causing them to shut down or have little to no business at all. I haven't thought about what globalization has done for Clarksville much, but to me for the most part, it has had an overall positive affect for us.

    ReplyDelete

    1. You made a great point on the smaller businesses. Clarksville didn't used to be this big. Smaller businesses were all over Clarksville, but you don't see much of them anymore because big corporations have come in and stolen the business away from them.

  37. Globalization has affected clarksville in many ways. With the tire planation being built and owned by foriengers it can help us and potentially bring more foreign businesses to Clarksville. It creates tons of new jobs opportunities for people to come and live in Clarksville to support themselves. Fort Campell is one of our main contributions to spreading globalization throughout Clarksville, and a lot of other cities too. Fort Campbell helps move and station a lot of military families from places all over the world to come and live in Clarksville. But with more and more people moving to Clarksville we have to worry about other issues. Pollution is a very big risk with factories continuing to be built, and overpopulation could happen, which coud lead to unemployment. Another way we spread gobilization throughout Clarksville is through our church communities going on missionaries outside to other countries. We interact with all sorts of different communities that are outside of our country, and it exposes us to a different way other people live their lives.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Globilzation in clarksville is a big issue. Many are open to the opportunity of new jobs and more income but other want the same old clarksville that we grew up with. With new chain businesses popping up everywhere you look along with the new jobs more people come which is making clarksville a bigger city with bigger needs. Many just want it to be like the same old town though.

  42. I think Globalization is great for Clarksville because it gives us more jobs here. The Tire Plant is a new organization here in Clarksville that is a foreign business.

  45. Globalization has definitely affected Clarksville. There are many more jobs opening up and making the economy better for locals. Also, at the same time businesses have to close down because they aren't getting any business. Globalization can be both good and bad, it just depends on how you look at it.

  46. Globalization might not have affected Clarksville as much as other cities because Clarksville's economy probably gets a boost from the military base being located here. However, I'm sure it still has some negative effects. Factories wanting to come here are few. Factory work is frequently outsourced. Locals would probably say globalization is mostly bad for Clarksville. The one positive effect would be that we can buy clothing and materials cheaper due to globalization though.

  52. Clarksville has tremendously been effected by globalization, in both good and bad ways. The good in this is that it brings more money and jobs into the community which help our economy. We recently got a tire plant (Hankook) that is based out of Seoul, South Korea. Hankook is the seventh largest tire company in the world. This global company is going to open up multiple job opportunities for people here in Clarksville, and will also make more money because it is a very large company.

  54. Clarksville has grown a whole bunch. It has been supplying people with new jobs, which is a great thing. The new Hankook tire company is coming and I pass that thing everyday I come home. Globalization is a good and bad thing. When the Hankook tire company is built, it will supply many jobs but, also the traffic is going to be crazy, that is why they are widening the Bridge and road there as we speak.

For instance, Clarksville was scheduled to have Hemlock Industry which would produce a high grade of carbon for solar cells and electronics. However, the plant did not relocate here which affected many citizens of Clarksville training to work in the factory.
